There are regular ferry services for passengers and cars.

Passenger service ferries operate from 5.30am to 11.30pm daily. Passenger fare per way: 60sen and runs every 20minutes.

These ferries operate from Butterworth Terminal to Penang's Weld Quay. From the Weld Quay, there are local buses to various destinations in Penang. Just make sure you hop onto the right bus. Alternatively, you can always take a ride on the trishaw to georgetown central if you're intending to stay in Georgetown. Travel time takes approximately 10 to 15minutes.

Car service ferries operate from 5.30am to 11.30pm daily. Fare per car from Butterworth to Penang : RM7.00 and passengers are charged at 60sen per person. Return from Penang to Butterworth is free. Travel time takes approximately 10 to 15minutes.

 

By Road

From Kuala Lumpur

Take the North-South Highway northwards. Travel time is approximately 5 1/2hours depending on traffic. Signs are clear for exit point from the Highway to Penang. The Penang Bridge toll is RM7.00 per entry into Penang. Returning trip from Penang to the mainland is free.

From North

Take the North-South Highway southbound. Signs are clear for exit point from the Highway to Penang. The Penang Bridge toll is RM7.00 per entry into Penang. Returning trip from Penang to the mainland is free.

 

By Air

Malaysia Airlines

Penang is easily accessible by air with daily flights from major capitals of the region. It has direct links with Singapore, Bangkok, Nagoya, Medan, Xiamen (China) and Madras, operated by Malaysia Airlines. The ticketing counter for buses are on the 2nd floor. Just present your boarding pass for a free ride into town

The Penang International Airport is about 20 km from the city centre.

Taxis from the airport follow the coupon system by which fares between the airport and various destinations in Penang are fixed. Air-conditioned taxis and limousines charge higher fares. Beware of touts.

The Penang Yellow Bus Co. operates an hourly service between the Airport and Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay) in the city between 6.00 am to 10.00 pm daily (Bus No. 83).

By Rail

The railway station is located at Butterworth on the mainland. From Butterworth, passengers can take the ferry service across to Penang . Please see above for ferries. The Ferry Terminal is connected to the Railway station by a series of covered walkways.

The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth takes approximately 6 hours. First and second class passengers travel in comfort in the air-conditioned coaches.Trains also have regular services to Alor Setar, Padang Besar, Haadyai and Bangkok from Butterworth.
