Sungkai Sambar Deer and Pheasant Wildlife Reserve - getting there

By Car

Take the North-South highway towards Ipoh. If you prefer, take the exit out of the highway at Tanjung Malim and head towards Bidor.Pass through Trolak and head towards Sungkai. The turn off into the narrow road to the reserve is not obvious. Be on the look out for the Wildlife Department's sign...Sungkai Sambar Deer and Pheasant Wildlife Conservation Centre. The centre is about 15km from Sungkai.

By Bus

From KL

Catch the Tanjung Malim Ekspress from the Puduraya main bus terminal for Tanjung Malim. Buses leave frequently. From Tanjung Malim, take a local non-airconditioned bus (Mogah Omnibus) to Sungkai. First bus at 6.30am, last bus at 6.45pm and leaves every 1/2hr. One way at RM3.20. At Sungkai, you may want to hire a taxi. Or you can take a bus from Sungkai to Mendering (route A133) and then walk from there. Mendering is a little village on the road into the centre.

From Ipoh

Take the Sri Maju Bus on the Ipoh-Tapah-Bidor-Tanjung Malim route and ask to be dropped off at Sungkai. For more info on scheduling, click to Ipoh. Time schedule is subject to changes made by the operators.

By Train

There is a KTM train station at Sungkai. Check the ktmb schedule for times. You may have to catch a taxi from here to Sungkai village or to the centre.

Accommodation and Packages to Sungkai

The nearest place to stay for the night is perhaps Trolak, some 27km from the center. Don't bother looking for a place to stay at Sungkai. Although, if there is a group, it could be worthwhile staying at the centre itself. They supposedly have basic accommodation at the centre. For more information, call the Site Ranger at +6 011-328 186 or if you can't get through, try calling the Perak state Department of Wildlife and National Parks at +6 05 - 527 3411
