Maliau Basin Conservation Area (Managing Waste)

1.1 Targeting a zero waste policy

In line with its overall management strategy for the MBCA, which is to save and to use sustainable the ecosystem, the MBCA management has adopted a zero waste policy for the MBCA. The zero waste policy shall promote the recycling of all discarded materials and objects (waste) as well as prevent the occurrence of waste in the first place.

1.2 “Bring in”- “bring out” policy for visitors

To prevent waste to accumulate inside the MBCA in the first place, it is compulsory for all visitors to bring back with them at the end of their visit all inorganic materials and objects. Organic wastes will be collected inside the MBCA and turned into compost.

1.3 Separation of all household waste

To promote recycling, several waste collection centers have been established within the Maliau Basin Studies Centre (MBSC). The collection centers are small huts (pondoks) that are equipped with bins to store, paper, plastic, metal, glass and non-recyclable inorganic waste. The waste collected will be transported to the respective recycling facilities (paper, plastic, metal, glass) or landfill sites (non-recyclable inorganic waste) in Tawau.

1.4 Promoting the use of re-usable water bottles for drinking water

The MBCA management has provided refill stations for drinking water at certain locations within MBSC. Visitors and staff can make use of these facilities. Visitors are required to bring their own refill-water bottles, while they will also be made available for sale at the souvenir shop. To enforce the use of re-usable water bottles, bottled mineral waters are allowed in MBCA. However, if for some reason you must bring bottled mineral water, please bring back them back with you when you leave MBCA.

1.5 Ban of problematic material inside the MBCA

Materials that cannot be recycled and have severe impacts to the environment are banned inside the MBCA. Currently, the list of banned items consists of disposable baby diapers, Styrofoam containers, all hazardous chemicals, radioactive materials/chemicals.

1.6 Composting of organic waste

All organic wastes will be collected and composted. All staff houses and MBCA kitchens are responsible to keep their organic wastes separated from their inorganic household wastes. The MBCA management will arrange to transport these wastes to the designated composting area.

1.7 Awareness raising

Waste management issues are incorporated into the Environmental Education Programme of MBCA. The MBCA management has the authority to enforce a penalty for those persons who fail to comply with the above guidelines/regulations.
