Mount Santubong Summit Climb ~ Santubong, Sarawak Borneo

Tour Description

Rising dramatically above the Santubong Coastline, this iconic mountain stands at a respectable 810 meters above sea level. Located some 35 kilometres from Kuching City and gazetted as a National Park on the 28 February 2007, it covers an area of 1410 ha. The summit trail starts at the Santubong National Park entrance and is an approximately relentless 3.5 km climb to the summit. Rated moderate to difficult, this hike involves scaling some steep climbs including up rope ladders on well marked trails. This challenging trail rewards trekkers with a wide array of flora and fauna amidst the beautifully lush rainforest and commanding views of the coastline from the summit on a clear day. A pretty waterfall offers a great way to cool off at the end of the hike.

Weather conditions and the water level of local rivers may force our guides to modify the tour in the interest of safety. In such cases, no refund will be offered.

Mount Santubong

The trek to the summit

As you will be expending loads of energy today, ensure that you are adequately fuelled with a hearty breakfast before the early pick up at your hotel. The road journey to the trailhead will take approximately 45 minutes depending on traffic conditions. Expect to arrive at the trailhead/park office by 8:30 am for a quick briefing and issuance of your drinking water and packed lunch by your guide before pushing off on your day of trekking up this majestic mountain. Take in the invigorating primary rainforest landscape as you trek along and marvel at the many gigantic Dipterocarp trees covering the entire mountains. Keep silent and you may see small insects and mammals cross the trail in front of you and birds overhead.

The trek to the summit will range from 2-3 hours for the very fit and 3 – 5 hours for the average to less fit trekker. It is a very strenuous trek so take your time and make sure you are well hydrated always. As you progress to higher grounds, you will have to negotiate some steep terrain with vines and ropes and finally some rather precarious rope ladders nearing the summit. The fabulous views of the coastline and the surrounding lands at the top further accentuate your elation at having reached the summit of this legendary mountain in Borneo. After 30 – 45 minutes rest whilst enjoying your packed lunch, it is time to make your way down again. With great caution, your descent will take approximately 2 to 3 hours and before you know it you are back down and in your vehicle being transferred back to Kuching. A most fulfilling physical challenge in Borneo.

The climb up and down entails us using rope ladders and ropes to move from one level to another (aluminium type ladders may have already replaced these by the time you read this) We would recommend that you be of good health but you don’t need to be a marathon runner. As you climb up it will become somewhat cooler, if only by a few degrees. At the top we recommend that you don’t waste to much time, take a rest, drink, eat and change that sweaty t-shirt for the descend down or you might actually get a chill from your own sweat.
