What is Wild@Heart

Wild@Heart is a comprehensive and professional series of conservation education programmes for students aged 12 – 17.  It has been designed by ApeMalaysia, a social enterprise that aims to connect people to endangered animals through conservation and education projects. 

With access to a number of special conservation and education project sites, the Wild@Heart programmes allow students to gain backstage passes to endangered animals such as orang-utans, sun bears, and other endangered & threatened creatures.  The projects range from captivity, rehabilitation and the wild, giving participating students the unique opportunity to participate in real-life conservation.

This immerses young people into the life of a scientist, accelerating their learning and motivating them to discover and explore the connection between animals, habitats and people through the scientific method. 

Experimental quantification and reflective qualification let the students learn at their own pace, with the ultimate goal of allowing the synthesis of individual opinions and critical thinking.  All done with an ethic of fun and hard work, this provides them with transferable skills that prepares them for future learning as well as developing them as global citizens for the challenges of a new Millennium.

What is unique about this programme?

~ Takes students out of the classroom and immerses them in project sites scattered across Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo;

~ Presents opportunity for contact with local communities in every site / ecosystem;

~ Provides encounters with animals in the zoos or in rehabilitation centres and in the wild.

~ In each setting, students learn the exacting science of animal observations, of measuring environmental parameters and of observations of all biodiversity in the landscape;

~ Gets an insider’s look into long term projects spread across Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo and get a chance to work with expert facilitators, scientists and conservation biologists in the field or in controlled environments

~ A percentage (up to 33%) from each participating student contributes DIRECTLY into the project and into conservation outcomes.

What change does this program bring about in students?

This program provides a very rare opportunity for students to participate in the project and make a personal, tangible, difference in each project site in the process of healing threatened habitats and in the welfare of endangered species both captive and in rehabilitation.

Why should a school or a student participate?

Schools are given a golden opportunity to deliver a holistic outward bound programme that address key current environmental issues in all international curricula. By participating in these programs students get an experiential immersion into complex topics that are difficult for teachers to plan practical activities for.

Whom does W@H target?

Wild@Heart targets any student aged 12 and above in any secondary school or college.
Any student who wants to make a difference, any student who wants a closer contact with nature, any student who wants a walk on the wild side or any student who loves animals is eligible to participate in the programs.

When do these programs take place?
These programs operate throughout the year and schools/ students are booked on a `first-come-first-served’ basis. Customised mix and match across project sites are also offered if the dates are available.

ApeMalaysia works with zoos in Malaysia:

~ to educate the public on issues influencing the survival of endangered species

~ improve knowlege development among zoo keepers

~ increase enrichment and interpretation of the animals within the zoo

~ establish a successful breeding programme for endangered Malaysian animals and to create a healthy gene pool for the future of their existence

Matang Wildlife Centre , Sarawak - Borneo

~ Re-establish a successful rehabilitation and release programme at Matang Wildlife Centre and develop it into a global centre of study

~ Focus on husbandry, enrichment, infrastructure, rehabilitation , release as well as knowledge transfer and enhanced interrelationships between relevant partneres and sustainable funding streams

~ Achieve conservation goals of having genetically sustainable orangutan population in well protected habitat in Sarawak

ApeMalaysia works with eco tourism partners , local communities, NGOs and authorities to:

~ Successfully establish and maintain reforestation of green corridors where these corridors connect isolated pockets of jungle so that wildlife can traverse without fear of encroaching into plantations and villages.

~ Reconnect orangutan and pygmy elephant populations to maintain genetically viable generations

~ Involve and empower local communities in sustainable forest management , wildlife protection and tourism practices

~ Ensure the sustainable use of the riverine forest for human development

~ Monitor flora and fauna within the kinabatangan sanctuaries

Batang Ai National Park, Sarawak - Borneo

ApeMalaysia works with the tribal communities to:

~ empower them to promote sustainable stewardship of the natural resources, in particular the mixed Dipteropcarp forests that support sustainable populations of orangutans, through alternative and environmentally based economic solutions and the application of clean technologies
