P.S. A favourite with Singaporean and European visitors, Bala Holiday Chalet's grounds and building has a history dating back to the 1930’s when the main building was built to house pupils of Miss Griff’s Tanglin School. Our stay at Bala Holiday Chalet was a disappointment. Although we naturally took into consideration that small family-run establishments would have it's little hiccoughs, we didn't expect the state of the chalets to be in such condition where the bathrooms were generally below the cleanliness level as would expect and the rooms that we stayed in were musty. Although as always, the garden is in its glorious state of bloom and care, the chalets certainly need a lot more work. Be warned, the nominal charge for firewood provided for those rooms with fireplaces goes for RM35 -RM40 per night! Go collect some dry wood during your evening walks instead. Hope that the management will soon repair the 1st floor roof panelling too!

Caution: If you thinking of staying at Bala's Holiday Chalet and have elderly people in your group, make sure that you get the rooms in the main building for them. The raffles suites and some of the newer rooms are located on a steep slope and walking up these steps to the rooms can be a bit too strenuous for them. These are some of the little things that the management does not impart upon booking of rooms unfortunately. If you have a group going to Camerons, best to book a bungalow which may work out cheaper.

Our room was spotless and quite comfortable, fresh towels were provided, there was plenty of hot water and the room was properly cleaned each day. We found the place to be absolutely delightful and well maintained. The gardens were gorgeous.

I have only a few complaints: 1) they did not have fresh strawberries which I thought was pretty lame considering where they are located; 2) despite our having a confirmed reservation at a specific rate for a room with two twin beds (I was traveling with my teenaged son) they took us to a room with one queen-sized bed and then tried to charge us more for the room we had reserved. When I protested, they then tried to charge us a higher rate for only one of the nights. It was only when I produced a copy of the e-mail that spelled out the reservation did they back off. This struck me as pretty sleazy. 3) toast was served with packaged, commercial jelly- I had to make a special request for the fresh jam that is served with tea and scones. A place that considers itself classy, as Bala's does, should not cut corners on things like this, guests really appreciate the small stuff.

Overall, despite these issues, we really enjoyed our stay there and generally found the service to be quite helpful and accommodating
