The morning classes include a wet market tour as part of the experience. With three different venues, you have the choice to cook where you want to learn all about Malay, Nyonya dishes and hawkers' food dishes. Everyone is invited to sign up for the class. The class takes three to five hours and involves hands-on experience. We also cook outdoors.
You will learn to identify the spices used and get involved in the cooking process. The fees also include a wet market tour.
If you have been wondering the correct ways to make curry or how do you get that special color and taste for the rendang, here is the perfect class that you should take up.
We will have fun using the old methods for grinding spices.
We could extract fresh coconut milk manually ourselves to get that fresh creamy milk (if you are up to it). Learn the names of the spices, its smell, how to handle them and some obscure traditional tips that you may not find in any other cookbooks.
Learn how to fold nasi lemak using the banana leaves. Discover how many types of ketupat you can make out of coconut leaves.
This cooking traditional food class should be fun and educational.
Even children can enjoy it! We do have cooking class programs for children and teenagers. The class is also perfect for a team building exercise.
So, come and join us. Please fill up the form below. Please book in advance to avoid disappointment. We need at least a day notice before the date of the class.
There is no minimum number of students. We still cater to one person on a scheduled date.

One of our first students was Samille Mitchell, a freelance journalist from Perth, she was brought in by Margaret Jasper, who is a travel agent attached to Tourism Malaysia. Later the experience was published in a West Australia newspaper:
A self-taught cook, the delightful Nazlina Hussin provides the cooking classes, allowing you to experience cooking in traditional Malay style. There are no canned or packet ingredients here — you even straddle a traditional coconut scraper to extract the flesh of the coconut and squeeze it by hand to make coconut milk. Nazlina guides you through the process of making a seriously tasty menu of seafood curry, stir-fried flat rice noodles with prawns and a dessert called bubur cha-cha. Then comes the best part — sitting down to sample the culinary offerings. |
According to Margaret, Samille confided to her that out of the three days of packed tours of Penang that they did, the cooking class and the guided tour at the Spice Garden was the most memorable experience she had.
