Be at privilege to come face-to-face with a wild Orang Utan. This trip combines two of Borneo’s most well-known wildlife Icons; the Orang Utan and the Proboscis Monkeys at the Lower Kinabatangan Area. On one of the days, you will get the opportunity to visit one of the best sites in Borneo to view wild orang utans, while at the same time participate in Red Ape Encounter's conservation effort, in the process of knowing more about these gentle and elusive creatures. The programme involves interpretation of scientific findings pertaining to the Orang-utan, threats to their population and habitat and the biodiversity of the Kinabatangan. The experience is all about learning and how to support the preservation of these natural resources, hence, the importance of ecotourism as one way to achieve conservation results for the Orang-utan, kinabatangan and the people.

On arrival at Sandakan Airport before 0800 hours, transfer to the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre for a video show. Trek ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden plank walks to witness the feeding of the orang utans at 1000hrs.

Continue to Sandakan jetty for 2½ hours boat journey to the multi awards winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge along Sabah's longest river, Kinabatangan with opportunity to view birds and wildlife in virgin mangrove, wetland and rainforest habitats. Late afternoon take a river cruise using electric motor in search of some of the 10 primate species. Sukau is home to Borneo pygmy elephants, orang utans, proboscis monkeys and all eight species of hornbill in Borneo.

Return for solar heated hot shower, candle light dinner overlooking the riverbank and slide show conducted by naturalist guide. Overnight at the award winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge, named by National Geographic Adventure magazine in 2009 as one of the top 50 jungle lodges in the world. (L/D)

Wake up to the calls of gibbons and hornbills. A 0600hrs morning river cruise up the Kinabatangan River to Kelenanap oxbow lake to view more birds and wildlife. After breakfast, proceed for an educational tour on the Hornbill Boardwalk located behind the lodge with our in-house naturalist. You also have the option to participate in our Kinabatangan Wildlife Corridor Regeneration Programme (KWICORP) by planting trees on our 65 acres adopted land. In the afternoon, we proceed for another river cruise for more wildlife. After dinner an optional night safari cruise (at a surcharge) spotting nocturnal animals, crocodiles and birds. Embark on an early morning boat trip up-river to the Red Ape Encounter (RAE) site which will take between 15-20 minutes. Please note that departure time would be advised by the supervisor at the lodge one day before as they depend on the report from coordinators of the RAE on the whereabouts of wild Orang Utans within the study site parameters, which is a loop trail of 1 hour walking distance. Guest are encourage to spend up to 3 hours at the site, though if you are more enthusiastic you may spend up to 5 hours observing the Orang Utan and talk to the research assistants. The jungle trail has slopes or is muddy at places, depending on the weather, so be prepared with appropriate jungle clothing.

This tour includes the services of RAE’s nature guides and research assistants, conservation fee to the study site, boat transfer and reforestations.

Overnight at Sukau Rainforest Lodge (B/L/D)

After breakfast, return to Sandakan by boat journey. Have lunch before we proceed for a short tour of Sandakan town including the market, Agnes Keith Museum and Australian War Memorial. Transfer to airport for the late afternoon flight back to Kota Kinabalu. (B/L)

Sukau Rainforest Lodge
The 20 rooms, multi international award winners, is built on stilts with a lounge, gift shop, education centre, Hornbill Boardwalk with two elephant passes, three open deck for wildlife viewing, an enclosed garden, a riverside Melapi restaurant, open sun-deck, river jetty. Electricity is supplied by acoustic generator, and hot water by solar heaters. All rooms are twin bedded, with ceiling fan, mosquito netting, attached bathroom, hot shower and toilets. River tours are conducted by boats powered by electric motors and four stoke outboard engines.

Birdlife is especially rich here including eight species of hornbills, kingfishers, egrets, darters, owls, kites, eagles, broadbills, doves, storm storks, herons, hawks, ospreys, falcon, pheasants, parakeets, bee eaters, woodpeckers, pittas, bulbuls, forktails, babblers, warblers, flycatchers, orioles, flowerpeckers, spiderhunters, among others..
