3 Days 2 Nights KuraKura Jungle Homestay - Kuching, Sarawak Borneo

"We have tried to build an ecological place with our own water supply and solar energy to power lights and a fridge. Situated 25min up river with a boat from Kpg Semadang (Liza’s home village) and with no road access we live peacefully surrounded by nature only. A beautiful place to stay and experience local life, culture, food and a inhospitable but amazing wilderness.

Basic but clean accommodation (no A/C) together with a amazing experience are what we can offer, either you choose to do any of our activities or just relax with a book while listening to the sounds of the rain forest

We're situated south of Kuching, in the hills of Borneo Highland, Padawan and close to the mountain ridge that borders Indonesia. Only 50 min drive from Kuching and 30 min drive from the airport we're perfectly located to take advantage of all that Padawan has to offer, including; Bidayuh Longhouses, Pristine Jungle, Caves, Kayaking, Rafflesia geo-park, Waterfalls and of course Semenggoh Wildlife Centre.." ~ Liza & Lars

A culinary garden walk:

Learn to understand the forest and how the locals have survived from what the forest can provide. What tastes good, what cures sickness, what is eatable and what may hurt you? Follow us plucking wild vegetables, fruits and herbs. If interested join us prepare all the ingredients for dinner.

Trekking:

Maybe you prefer to spend the day in the jungle and experience the wild. There are many sorts of plants, trees and animals to be seen along the way, just keep your eyes alert. We got a few different trails to choose about, both easy and more challenging. There are also caves along some of the trails that can be explored.

Kayaking:

A relaxing and nice way of experience the jungle while slowly floating down Sarawak river. There’s a good chance of spotting Kingfishers, Eagle, Monitor lizards and other animals from the kayak if you’re not making to much noise. The trip starts further upstream and ends up in Kpg Semadang, Liza’s home village. A modern Bidayuh village with about 200 villagers. A 4-5 hours trip (easy paddling) including lunch and transfer. If interested let us know in advance so that we can arrange with the kayak company (not us) and book the trip.

Longhouse tour and Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre:

The feeding time for the Orangutans is 09.00am to 10.00am and we need to leave KuraKura Homestay at 07.45am. If interested to do Semenggoh only or the Longhouse only we can arrange that as well.

(Semeggoh only can be done on the way to Kuching on departure day if interested)

Waterfall and longhouse tour:

Spend the day at a hidden waterfall in the middle of the jungle, where we can swim, relax, sunbath and enjoy our lunch. About 1 hour drive from Kpg Semadang (our village) and a short walk (about 25min) through the jungle there’s a beautiful waterfall surrounded by nature only.

On the way we will stop at Annah Rais Longhouse, a touristy but yet a real longhouse. The people here is used to visitors and with an relaxed atmosphere it’s quite pleasant to walk around and learn about Bidayuh culture.

Because of the road condition up the mountain and the danger of flash floods, this trip depend on the weather and will not always be doable.

Pick up time:

09.00am from your hotel in Kuching or direct from airport at an arranged hour (not later than 4pm).

Trip Overview

About 50min from Kuching City and 15min boat trip from Kpg Semadang you’ll find Liza and Lars’ jungle home surrounded by the rainforest of Sarawak, Borneo.

At KuraKura you will find complete peacefulness, no cars or stress; only birdsong and the sounds from the rainforest.

Unless you want to relax on the balcony with a book and occasionally cool down in the river, there are a few different activities to attend.

Jungle shopping: Learn to understand the forest and how the locals have survived from what the forest can provide. What tastes good, what cures sickness, what is eatable and what may hurt you? Follow the hosts to the nearby jungle to pluck wild vegetables, fruits and herbs. If interested join them in preparing all the ingredients for supper.

Trekking: Maybe you prefer a half day walk in the jungle, experience the wild. There are many sorts of plants, trees and animals to be seen along the way, just keep your eyes alert. At the far end of our bat cave there’s a small crystal clear stream where guests usually stop for lunch before heading back.

River Safari: Paddle up the river where guests can stop at one of the beaches for lunch and a bath. There’s a good change of spotting Kingfishers, Eagle, Monitor lizards and other animals from the boat if we’re not making to much noise.

Guests can also paddle downstream and end up in Kpg Semadang, Liza’s home village. A modern Bidayuh village with about 200 villagers, during daytime most people are either working in town or at their garden somewhere around the village. Get some refreshments in the village shop, visit the herbal garden and meet with the friendly villagers.

The Hosts :

Liza: Born and grew up in Semadang village, a small Bidayuh village about 15 min away.

Went to Canada as a teenager, spent a few years there before she started to travel around the world. Met Lars and got stucked in Oslo, Norway for many years before they both moved to Borneo to settle down.

Lars: Born and grew up in Oslo, Norway.

Lived a rather normal life before he found out the thrill around traveling. With biology as a favorite topic he went to Borneo’s rain forest twice trying to explore the jungle and its inhabitants. He met Liza and moved back home, where they both worked hard to finance their dream: Kurakura Homestay
